Doug Fowler – Rotary Foundation

Doug Fowler may be new to the Rotary Club of Tryon, but he is well aware of the power Rotary has to change the world. When Doug and his wife Deborah moved to Lake Lure, he joined the Rotary Club of Tryon because he wanted to continue the Rotary work he had been doing in California. Doug was a very active member of the Rotary Club of Apple Valley (CA), where he was recognized as Rotarian of the Year, and served as both Club President and District 5300 Governor.

At a recent meeting of the Rotary Club of Tryon, Doug shared with the members his experiences with service projects supporting the Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus: Promoting Peace; Fighting Disease; Providing Clean Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene; Saving Mothers and Children; Supporting Education; Growing Local Economies.

During his presentation, Doug explained how the Rotary Club of Apple Valley provided fire trucks and other equipment to help protect the city of Puruándiro in the Mexican state of Michoacán. The Rotary Club of Apple Valley heard regularly from the firefighters about how the new equipment was being used to help protect the city and its citizens.

This fire truck project, and the relationship that was developed between the Club and the city, lead the Rotary Club to help a young Mexican girl acquire a prosthetic leg after a tragic car accident. The girl is now a young lady working in a store to support her family, something that would not have been possible without the support of Rotary.

These projects eventually lead to other projects including distribution of the Polio vaccine in India, cultural visits to Turkey, building earthen dams to control flood waters, distributing wheel chairs, outfitting a rehabilitation center to treat injury in Mexico, and many other projects. Doug stressed the important work Rotary members can do because of the donations made to the Rotary Foundation. Many of the projects were made possible because of matching grants from the Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Club of Tryon is excited to have Doug as a member and we are looking forward to expanding our service to the world. As Doug said during his presentation, “Don’t let not knowing exactly how to do a project stop you from getting started”.
