Ortiz Award Winner – Sydney Waldman

As part of our service to the community, the Rotary Club of Tryon awards college scholarships to high school seniors each year. Although the process was a little different last year due to the Covid-19 restrictions, the Club was able to recognize the hard work of our Seniors with scholarships.

The Rotary Club of Tryon also presents the Frank Ortiz Award to a Senior who “shows outstanding leadership and dedication to the ideals of Rotary”. The 2019-2020 recipient of the Frank Ortiz Award is Sydney Waldman.

Frank Ortiz Award Winner Sydney Waldman and Rotary Club of Tryon President Skip Taylor

As a Senior at Polk County High School, Sydney was a Volleyball standout where she served as the Team Captain and was recognized as the Western Highlands Conference Player of the Year.

At the beginning of her Senior year, Sydney was also awarded the WLOS Channel 13 Scholar Athlete award. She was Ranked 2nd in her class, planned to participate in Volleyball and Track, served as the President of the school FFA chapter and planned to attend UNC Chapel Hill in the Fall to study psychology.

Sydney recently returned from UNC Chapel Hill and met with Rotary Club of Tryon President Skip Taylor to receive her award. The club is proud of all Sydney has accomplished and we look forward to seeing what she does in the future.
