Hursey Visits Rotary Club

Tryon’s resident author, Sally Hursey, visited the Rotary Club of Tryon a few months ago to share the story of her latest book: Heroes of the Heart. The book is about seven dogs that rescued seven veterans and the one man who made it happen!

Sally contacted Bill Brightman, a Vietnam veteran and founder of Service Dog for Veterans, because she wanted to share the story of the work he was doing. The Service Dog for Veterans program helps veterans regain dignity, healing, and normalcy by providing training for veterans and their service dogs until each pair becomes an inseparable team with new purpose in life.

Author Sally Hursey and Service Dogs For Veterans Founder Bill Brightman

Sally’s book starts by introducing you to Bill and the work he and the team at Service Dogs for Veterans are doing. Each chapter after that introduces you to a veteran and his/her dog. Chapter by chapter you learn about the struggles of local veterans and how they are being helped by their partnership with a service dog. When one of the veterans was asked how the service dog was helping, his young daughter quickly answered “My daddy doesn’t get angry with me now”.

The easiest way to get Sally’s new book is from her website, . A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to Service Dogs for Veterans (SD4V) , a nonprofit 501c3 organization.
